The Dramatic Heart of Wales

Holiday season is well and truly on the horizon and a 2022 mini-break in The Dramatic Heart of Wales offers something for everyone. With Easter and the Jubilee long weekend ahead of us, the promise of longer days and warmer weather, events are back on the agenda and we can’t wait to welcome you to experience a short break in Neath Port Talbot.

Margam Country Park is a hive of activity this Spring. With events to suit the whole family (even including the dog), from aspiring superheroes to movie buffs, there’s a full programme of events throughout April and May.

Feel the chilli-heat at this year’s Margam Chilli Festival on 3rd April. This all day, free* to enter event is a must-visit for chilli enthusiasts and will give you the opportunity to learn new cooking methods, taste sauces, jams and pastes and pick up some seeds to grow your own.

April will also see some fantastic family events in Margam Country Park with the arrival of the Lions and Lilies Re-enactment Weekend on the 9th April. Kids and grown-ups will have the chance to discover what life was like in 17th century, learning about combat, handicrafts, and food from that era. Try on armour and learn how to handle a pike while taking in the sword demonstrations and archery re-enactments. Visit the Exhibition Room in the Orangery Gardens on the 14th April for Dog Pawtraits and have a fun mini photoshoot of your dog – there’s even the option to have your family in the pictures too! Closely following the Lions and Lilies is a Superhero Spectacular on 18th April. This ticketed event will see Titan the Robot performing in a show full of fun and surprises. He will be joined by a whole host of superhero characters and princesses – why not dress up yourself?

If you want a slightly slower-paced experience, visit Margam Country Park in May for the Adventure Cinema screenings of West Side Story, Mamma Mia and Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Moving away from Margam Country Park, there are plenty of other events this Spring in Neath Port Talbot. For female mountain biking enthusiasts, the inaugural Sisters of Send festival is taking place on 14th-15th May. As well as getting the chance to ride the trails in Afan Forest Park, there will be plenty of learning opportunities to learn more about the sport and try out new equipment.

Pontardawe Arts Centre and the Gwyn Hall in Neath have an impressive line-up of performers this Spring. Dom Joly is bringing his latest Travel & Comedy in the Danger Zone tour to the Gwyn Hall in April while Pontardawe Arts Centre is hosting a wide range of live music performers from folk duo, The Unthanks through to rock band, Karnataka. The Princess Royal Theatre in Port Talbot is also sporting a full line up this Spring, with comedian Ed Byrne, an evening with Strictly star Amy Dowden and a concert from doo-wop nine-piece, The Darts.
