What’s on this Summer: Part 2
In the second of our ‘What’s on this Summer’ blog, we will be sharing our top pick summer holidays events in the Dramatic Heart of Wales.
With family packed adventure, action and entertainment, there is plenty to keep the children happy. With suggestions for the parents too, there is lots of inspiration for exploring the Dramatic Heart of Wales this summer.

15th July: Alice in Dreamland – Dance Wales UK
Join Alice on a wonderful adventure meeting dancers, acrobats, singers, and cheerleaders. Dance Wales UK showcases its local talent at The Princess Royal Theatre.
15th July: Beginner Backpacking Skills Course
Looking to embrace your inner Bear Grylls? Join Wales Outdoors to learn the basics of backpacking and wild camping before embarking on an overnight adventure in Glynneath.
15th & 16th July: Step Back in Time with Medieval Knights…
Join the knights and archers of the Lions and Lillies Group at Margam Country Park and learn hands-on about medieval life.
15th & 16th July: Dragon Walking and Ultra Marathon
Cheer on the incredible runners at Margam Country Park or Aberavon beach. It is not too late to enter if you are looking to participate in this ultra-marathon.
21st & 22nd July: Neath Real Ale and Cider Festival
Neath Real Ale and Cider Festival is back at the Old Town Hall with events across Neath celebrating the day. Book early to claim the limited celebration tankard.
23rd July: Summer Family Fun Day Out
Come and meet Paw Patrol’s Marshall and Chase, as well as Paddington Bear and many more at Margam Country Park’s Summer Family Fun Day Out.
29th July: Lost Peatlands Project Wildblitz
Nature enthusiasts and budding naturalists, join the Lost Peatlands Project for a day packed with family friendly activities. It is worth finding out about Lost Peatlands’ full summer itinerary as they have plenty to do, including bat night walks and otter spotting.
8th August: Slimy Science
Get stuck in at Margam Country Park with crazy science experiments. There will plenty to make, and of course, take home. Event for children aged 4+.
8th & 10th August Glamorgan Cricket (Durham and Warwickshire)
Catch the cricket action this summer and watch Glamorgan Cricket battle it out with Durham and Warwickshire at Neath Cricket Club.
13th August: The Big Cycle
In aid of Prostate Cymru, this event sees competitors navigating a testing, tough, and historic route. There is a 54- and 72-mile route, both starting at Margam Country Park.
17th – 20th August Pontardawe Music Festival
Since 1978, Pontardawe’s Music Festival has been going strong. With 100 bands, across four days, all in Pontardawe, this year is the biggest yet and is guaranteed to offer an amazing experience for the whole family.
18th – 20th August: Adventure Outdoor Cinema
Over three evenings, Margam Country Park is hosting its unmissable outdoor cinema experience. Showing Elvis, Dirty Dancing and Top Gun Maverick. All films rated 12.
19th August: Freemen of Gwent
Meet the Freemen of Gwent at Neath Abbey and discover their captivating stories about medieval life and battles in the Dramatic Heart of Wales.
24th August An Evening with Adam Jones & Joe Marler Gwyn Hall
Join these rugby legends as they share their tales at the Gwyn Hall. Hosted by local rugby hero Rowland Phillips, and with an auction, this is an unmissable event for rugby fans. Event rated 15+.
26th August: Andre Rieu’s 2023 Maastrticht Concert: Love is All Around
A unique cinema experience of the King of Waltz’s iconic Vrijthof Square performance shown at the Gwyn Hall. Rieu teams his beloved Johann Strauss Orchestra up with the Gospel Choir to offer a musical delight.
2nd & 3rd September: The Great British Food Festival
Don’t miss the iconic foodie event of south Wales at Margam Country Park. Chef demos, challenge stages, bake stages and so much more await.
