Guest Blog – Surf School Wales

With one of the longest stretches of sandy beach in Wales, the Dramatic Heart of Wales is the perfect place to jump out of your comfort zone and try a new water sport. Aberavon Beach is known for its great surf and golden sands but don’t just take our word for it. Here, Nick Thomas from Surf School Wales tells us why learning to surf is the perfect summer holiday activity:

“I run Surf School Wales with my wife Liane. Surfing is our passion and we love sharing our knowledge and expertise with our visitors.

“Aberavon is a unique place to learn to surf. You’ll find a warm welcome, great surf and a contrasting landscape, with the steelworks acting as our backdrop, where the natural world meets heavy industry. It’s the perfect location for complete novices and we pride ourselves on giving all our visitors the confidence to give it a go and learn something new.

“We do lots of sessions for children from the age of 8 upwards. Surfing isn’t really a mainstream sport and many children that visit us haven’t ever even touched a surfboard, so we get great satisfaction in seeing their confidence grow throughout the session. Safety is our first priority and we teach children beach and water safety, how to carry a board properly and what to do if they run into difficulty. We then work with them on learning how to catch a wave on their stomach and work our way up to catching a wave while standing on the board.

“We also run sessions exclusively for women, for adults and private group bookings. It can be a real thrill for adults to try a new sport like surfing and to feel the excitement of being in the water and learning something new. We get amazing feedback from our visitors and we love that they see our sessions as a highlight of their holiday.

“Since the lockdown we’ve seen a huge surge in visitors from outside the area who are keen to staycation in the UK. We see lots of visitors from London and the M4 corridor and even as far as Manchester. Aberavon is quickly gaining a reputation as a great surfing location!

“There’s lots to do in Aberavon before or after your surfing lesson. The promenade is the perfect place for a long walk or bike ride and there are lots of cafes and restaurants to refuel while watching the tide come in. We’re also known for our amazing sunsets and views over Swansea Bay.

“Make sure you check us out if you’re planning a visit to the Dramatic Heart of Wales this summer. We’re looking forward to welcoming you!”
