Known for its strong industrial history, many visitors to the Dramatic Heart of Wales have a pleasant surprise when they discover the 3-mile stretch of beautiful golden sand that we call Aberavon Beach.
With a gentle shelf that slowly slopes into the waters of Swansea Bay, Aberavon Beach is the perfect destination if your ideal summer’s day is spent playing beach games, building sandcastles, enjoying a dip in the sea, and indulging in an ice cream or two.
This award-winning seaside resort is incredibly popular with families due to its cleanliness and close-by facilities, as well as the numerous places to eat. For those who can’t go to the seaside without experiencing a traditional fish & chips, Franco’s Fish Bar is just a stone’s throw away from the sand. Having been at the heart of the Aberavon seafront since 1970, this popular chippy knows exactly how to satisfy your cravings! With indoor and outdoor seating, as well as gluten free, vegetarian and vegan offerings, every member of the family will leave Franco’s feeling satisfied.
Alternatively, if you fancy more of a bistro-style meal, then we definitely recommend The Front – Wales’ first independent drive-through restaurant. Serving up delicious locally-sourced food using Welsh suppliers, it’s dog-friendly and provides great views across Swansea Bay.
If your family prefers sweet to savoury, just a little way down the beach awaits Remo’s, a lovely seafront coffee shop and restaurant that houses a dreamy ice-cream parlour. Their famous ice-cream is all homemade, and they have over 42 mouth-watering flavours to choose from.
Once you’re full of food and fed up of sandcastles, explore the wide variety of activities that Aberavon Beach has to offer. These include Pirate Cove Adventure Golf, a fully accessible course with 12 holes and sun cream stations to ensure you stay safe in the heat.
After you’ve finished your game, cool off at Aberavon Aqua Splash, a splash park comprising of over 30 water features including fountains and jets. This popular park is open daily from 10am-7pm, giving little ones plenty of time to play and enjoy some fun in the sun.
For the thrill seekers and adrenaline hunters, the eastern end of the beach is dedicated to surfing and kitesurfing. Grab your boards and slip into the sea for a while, before flopping down on the sand and having a cheeky nap in the summer sun. Even if you don’t know how to surf, you can still enjoy the sport thanks to Surf School Wales, who offer surfing lessons for all ages, as well as equipment hire.
Of course, we can’t mention fun at the seaside without including our four-legged friends! Dogs are welcome all year round at the dock beach, which is located at the far end of the promenade. Here, they can run around off the lead, chase their tennis balls, and splash in the shallows to their heart’s content! For the rest of the beach, dogs are prohibited from going on to the beach itself from May – September, and they must be on leads at all times on the promenade.
Whatever your plans this summer, if you’re searching for a fulfilling beach day that the whole family will love, look no further than Aberavon Beach!
