This historic waterway, built in the late 18th century once played a vital role in transporting materials from the valley’s early industries and mines. The canal links all the way to the Tennant Canal at Aberdulais Basin. Today, it provides a tranquil route through the valley where a series of locks and quiet stretches of water create a calm and rewarding walk.
Take your time heading down towards Tonna, soaking up the ever-changing scenery. When it’s time for a breather, stop at Booths by the Bridge, a popular family-run café known for great speciality coffee, quality food, and excellent service.
Continue into Neath, and if you fancy a short detour, make time to explore Neath Abbey. One of the best preserved monastic sites in Wales, the abbey dates back to 1130 and was once home to a community of Cistercian monks. Its impressive stone ruins and peaceful setting offer a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich history, making it well worth a visit during your Father’s Day outing with your pup – dogs must be kept on the lead here.
