Get Outside This Spring: Outdoor Adventures in the Dramatic Heart of Wales

Neath Port Talbot is filled with beauty, from the rolling mountains to the sweeping beaches. A natural adventure playground for families looking to explore the great outdoors, it would be a missed opportunity to simply drive through the area on the motorway without making a pit-stop and taking the time to explore.

Stretch your legs and enjoy a walk through our countryside, soak up the sights, and get to know the fascinating people who pack this place with personality. If you do, you’ll soon realise why this corner of the world is an incredibly special place.

Let’s dive in to how you can explore Neath Port Talbot in all of its springtime glory.

Walk A Mile In Our Shoes

They say the best way to get to know someone is by walking a mile in their shoes, so lace up those walking boots and take to our trails!

We don’t call ourselves the Dramatic Heart of Wales for no reason, and when you start exploring our diverse landscapes, you’ll understand why. Where else can you observe the beautiful contrast of nature and man-made wonders? Waterwheels and walking trails, canals and country parks, coast paths and countryside Manors – they all shape our region.

Our walks are for everyone, so you can embrace them completely at your own pace.

We’ve created an interactive map of all of our walks, which you can find here. Happy hiking!

A Road Cyclist’s Dream

Winding lanes, thrilling descents and tough climbs, we have everything that road cyclists love – including those all-important cafes for a pit stop!

We even have our very own ‘Tour de Cinq Vallees’, a 70-mile road race taking in some of the most iconic climbs in South Wales, invented by The Port Talbot Wheelers in 1958.

If you’re more of a casual, relaxed cyclist, Neath Port Talbot is home to a wide range of safe cycle routes that are perfect for families, including routes along disused railway lines and peaceful canal towpaths.

Activities For Everyone

When we say you can see and do it all in Neath Port Talbot, we really mean it!

Whether you’re visiting the area with friends or family, there’s a wide range of activities that you can enjoy as a group. For the thrill seekers, Afan Forest Park’s famous mountain biking trails will definitely elevate your heart rate. To elevate more than your heart rate, why not take to the skies at Go Ape in Margam Country Park?

For the water enthusiasts, no trip to the area would be complete without visiting Aberavon Beach. The sandy expanse is perfect for families who hope to enjoy a sunny day of relaxation, and the swells of the sea are fantastic for surfing and body boarding.

If canoeing or kayaking is more your thing, the South Wales Adventure Company at Resolven Canal are more than happy to take your group out for a session.

If we listed all of the activities you could get up to and the places you could see, we’d be here all day! View our complete list here, and allow your sense of adventure to lead the way this spring.
