As the Autumn evenings begin to unfurl before us, sea-mist blanketing the valleys and vales of the Dramatic Heart of Wales, this region becomes shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Autumn walks meander alongside fast-flowing rivers, crunching over rust-coloured leaves and past ancient, storied sites rich in culture and history.
But what mysterious tales can be uncovered in the towns, villages and coastline of Neath Port Talbot?
Robert King, a local historian and ghost hunter, has been collecting stories of haunted tales of Neath and the surrounding areas for over 40 years. Robert explains: “The long and storied history of Neath Port Talbot, here in the Dramatic Heart of Wales, makes for incredible tales and ‘ghost walks’ – ideal for visitors planning trips for Halloween and beyond.
“This area has long been home to fascinating tales and unexplainable hauntings. From apparitions to strange sightings and happenings across the streets of Neath and surrounding areas, the Dramatic Heart of Wales is home to many supernatural phenomena.
“Ghostly monks are said to haunt the Cistercian Neath Abbey, and there have been eery sightings reported of a Victorian Policeman on Neath’s Old Market Street. Given the town’s tumultuous history dating back to the 12th century monks warring between Margam and Neath Abbeys, and the region’s boom as the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, we are constantly walking in the footsteps of those who have gone before us ¾ many of whom may still have stories to tell. Mystery awaits around every corner of this area.
“I believe it is important to respect the tales of the generations before, and to learn the history behind haunted tales, all to better understand what shaped the region into the creative, historic, cultural hub it is becoming.
Whether visiting Neath Abbey, Margam Abbey and Celtic Stones Museum, the haunted halls of Margam Castle, the ancient sites of Aberdulais Falls or the streets of Neath town centre, there are many areas in the region which offer ghostly happenings and spooky tales.”
