Steely Adventurers

If you and your family love an action-packed adventure holiday then the Dramatic Heart of Wales could be everything you’re looking for.

Base yourself at the unique FSC Margam Discovery Centre. Designed by The Welsh School of Architects, the award-winning, state of the art, lowcarbon accommodation has striking features including glass walls which immerse visitors into the surrounding natural environment.

Alternatively at Tyn Cellar Farm visitors have a choice of six high quality self-catering cottages or B&B accommodation. This 17th Century, Grade 2 listed property offers 4* accommodation with a quaint country vibe and is located 2.5 miles from Margam Country Park.

Start your day with a splash! Surf and paddleboard lessons are available at the beautiful Aberavon Seafront, one of Wales’ longest sandy beaches. The friendly, local team of instructors from Surf School Wales are keen to share their passion and love of the sea in a safe and fun environment. With a contemporary promenade complete with numerous restaurants, ice cream parlours, adventure parks and adventure golf, Aberavon Seafront has all you need for a complete day of excitement and is located just 6 miles from Margam Country Park.

If you prefer to adventure on drier land, Margam Park Adventure offers some great family trail riding. Explore the routes yourself or take a tour with the strong community of local instructors, coaches and guides. Novice or younger cyclists can enjoy the flat access roads and wilderness rides for beginners. No matter what your ability, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Thrill-seekers can find exhilaration high up too! The Go Ape Treetop Challenge is home to the UK’s biggest Tarzan Swing – a six-metre leap of faith which will test your nerve and the strength of your stomach. The spectacular high ropes course is made up of an array of tree-totree crossings and balancing challenges, zip and zoom through the landscape set in the backdrop of our steel-making town, experience the beauty and grit of our surprising scenery. From the heights of the trees you might also spot the herd of Margam Park deer which can often be seen grazing in the fields.

If heights aren’t your thing, activities such as stand up paddle boarding, orienteering, archery and bushcraft provide you with the chance to take on a new challenge. Hosted by Margam Park Adventure, these activities all take part in the picturesque surroundings of the 850-acre Margam Country Park. A great opportunity to bond; skill, navigation and focus will be required from the grown-ups and children alike!

Do you have a need for speed? The stunning surroundings of Margam Country Park are the perfect location for a go-karting safari adventure. The flat gravel and tarmac roads make for an exhilarating ride to be enjoyed by all ages. Family gokarts allow four people to share in the fun of pedalling or the grown-ups can do the work whilst the kids sit up front, immersed in the beautiful surroundings. Don’t forget to wave at other families as you pass them by!

No trip to South Wales would be complete without a visit to the local waterfalls. Aberdulais Falls are the easiest to enjoy, thanks to the National Trust – run centre that makes the most of both the natural beauty and industrial heritage. Some waterfalls are accessible by wheelchair, others, such as Melincourt Waterfall, are easy enough for families, while a few are reached at the end of a good walk along woodland paths.

If you are heading back to the FSC Margam Discovery Centre, enjoy a freshly prepared seasonal meal made from locally sourced ingredients. The centre has been awarded the Soil Association’s Food for Life Bronze Award which recognises organisations who provide visitors with healthy, nutritious and sustainable meals.

There is a variety of choice for dinner nearby too. The award-winning Grand Sultan Indian Restaurant is the perfect restaurant for families to enjoy superb food and drinks. Set in 25 acres of lush green scenery overlooking the Eglwys-y–Nunydd lake, the Grand Sultan scooped up the award for Best Restaurant and Takeaway in Wales in the Arta Awards 2019.

There is a variety of choice for dinner nearby too. On Aberavon Seafront you will find Franco’s Fish and Chips and Café Remos. There’s nothing more authentically British than fish and chips on a sandy beach and Franco’s has picked up a Good Food Award for Fish and Chips 2020. Café Remos offers a unique combination of Italian and Welsh classics as well as being home to a flavoursome ice cream parlour for those with a sweet tooth.

The excitement isn’t just limited to the daytime either! Margam Country Park hosts a range of family events throughout the year. Music events, outdoor cinema and food festivals have something for all the family and some continue late into the evening. Other activities like night time walks and bush craft activities are a huge hit with young children and teenagers, a perfect way to round up the busy days of memory-making and family bonding.
